Wokingham Berkshire: A small market town located to the west of Bracknell in Berkshire, Wokingham has a population of around 30,000 and a history going back to the times of the Anglo Saxons, when it got its name from a Saxon chief called Wocca, the town has held a market since the early 13th century.

Wokingham History: Taking its name from a Saxon leader called Wocca, Wokingham means roughly “home of Wocca’s people”. A market town from very early times, Wokingham was granted its first charter to hold a weekly market in 1219. Permission to hold 3 annual fairs was purchased in 1258 by the Bishop of Salisbury, who also did much to develop Wokingham as a town proper. In 1583 a town charter was granted by Elizabeth I.
For over two centuries Wokingham was notable for its bull-baiting (a barbaric “sport” which was eventually banned in 1833), an annual event which took place in Market Place and the yard of the Rose Inn. Bulls were tethered and baited by dogs, and eventually locked in the Rose Inn yard to fight it out with numerous dogs (which were often injured and killed), until finally being destroyed, with leather and meat distributed to the town’s poor. Another horrid "sport" which often took place was cock fighting, the cock-pit being situated in Cock Walk.
An industry for which the town became well known was bell making, its foundry supplying many local churches as well as others throughout southern England.
